Valencia GP: Dovizioso seventh, Iannone crashes out. Pirro finishes twelfth

Andrea Dovizioso finished seventh in the final round of the 2015 season, the Valencia GP held at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Cheste, while his team-mate Andrea Iannone was forced to retire after a crash on lap 3. Wild-card Michele Pirro ended the race in twelfth place.

Both Ducati Team riders got off to a good start from the third row: at the end of lap 1 Iannone crossed the line in fourth place and Dovizioso in fifth. After Iannone’s crash, Dovizioso held on to fourth until lap 12, but then lost some more positions over the next few laps to finish the race in seventh.

Michele Pirro, who started from row 4, moved into tenth on lap 2, and he held on to that position until lap 16. The Ducati Test Team rider was then passed by a recovering Crutchlow and then by Viñales and finished the last round of the season in twelfth.

The final championship standings see Iannone fifth overall and Dovizioso seventh, while Ducati and the Ducati Team confirm their third place in the Constructors’ and Teams’ standings.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team #04) – 7th
“Obviously I cannot be satisfied with today’s result, because I am not riding the way I want and am unable to get the best potential from the bike. Some of the characteristics of the GP15 make it difficult for me to make the difference, and so I hope that we will manage to make the right modifications next year, taking advantage of next season’s regulation changes.”

Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team #29) – DNF
“My race began well with a good start, and I tried to push as hard as possible as I had nothing to lose. I tried to stay with the top guys and I was pushing Pedrosa, who had an excellent pace. Unfortunately I made a mistake and crashed out, but sometimes you have to be prepared to risk everything to try and reach an important objective. I want to thank my team for this fantastic year, as well as Ducati and all the guys in Bologna for the support they have given me since I joined the factory team. I am very happy with the final result even though we lost out on fourth place, which I was aiming for, and I am sure that next year we will be ready to fight in a big way.”

Michele Pirro (Ducati Test Team #51) – 12th
“In the end I am a bit disappointed, because I rode well especially at the start, but then I struggled a bit and lost contact with the second group where there was also Dovizioso. However I tried to do my best and bring home some useful indications for the team, even though this is the last time we used the Bridgestone tyres. I want to thank Ducati for giving me this opportunity as well as all the guys in Ducati Corse for their great commitment. From Tuesday onwards we will start working again to try and make the Desmosedici even more competitive next year.”

Luigi Dall’Igna (Ducati Corse General Manager)
“The championship has concluded with a race in which we didn't obtain the results we had expected. I feel really sorry for Iannone, who today made the only mistake in his entire season, but I have to say that overall he had an extraordinary championship. Dovizioso has been in a bit of difficulty over the last few races, but in any case took the GP15 five times to the podium this year. Now we immediately start working for 2016 with two days of tests here at Valencia on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Ducati and Tudor: the partnership continues

The Tudor Fastrider Black Shield Chronograph

If you had to compare the TUDOR Fastrider Black Shield to a motor bike, a symbol of power and a conductor of emotions, you would think, without the shadow of a doubt, of the Ducati Diavel. TUDOR's Fastrider Black Shield Chronograph and the Ducati Diavel salute the continuation of this partnership, launched in 2011 and as true as it is unorthodox, between Tudor and Ducati. We are not dealing here with the classical relationship between two partners or two brands. The alliance between TUDOR and Ducati is much deeper and represents a sharing of values and of ethos and a common approach to style. The partnership is aiming to develop and grow unexpected points of contact. Tudor has accordingly chosen to go further by giving life to an original initiative: to give expression to the potency of style represented by its Fastrider Black Shield with a unique creation. In this case, with a Ducati Diavel by TUDOR that is way out of the ordinary, customised and colour-coded to match this TUDOR model. It provides tangible proof of the closeness of style shared by these two brands, enabling them to celebrate their partnership in a more dynamic way and together lay new foundations in a history not lacking for parallels.
New Multistrada 1200: expectations are rising!

Ducati's latest arrival described by someone who's already tried it.

Expectations are rising about the new Multistrada 1200. An innovative model, that can "merge" four bikes into one, from touring to city riding and from tarmacked bends to light off-roading, thanks to its exclusive technical equipment.

As Ducatisti know already, the star features are the new Testastretta DVT, an engine that, for the first time in the history of Ducati twin-cylinders, uses an ingenious variable timing system, and the new IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) that intervenes on the performance of the whole chassis, ensuring even greater control, enjoyment and safety.

To give you a taster of how the new Multistrada runs, we asked those who are already trying it out a few questions here in Borgo Panigale. Some employees, technicians and engineers are actually testing the first examples together with the test riders, in order to make sure the bike is set up perfectly before it goes out to the dealerships.

So we heard the judgement of Niko Baldini, Field Quality Analyst at Borgo Panigale, one of those special "testers". "Before I became a member of staff I was a biker and a passionate Ducatista for many years." says Niko "I've owned and ridden a lot of Ducatis, even if I still have my now veteran 999 at home in the garage. In the past I've ridden all the generations of the Multistrada and when I knew that I would be able to have the chance to test the new Multistrada I was very happy and excited; I really couldn't wait to actually put my hands on all the work my colleagues in the design office had done."

In terms of his first impressions, Niko says:

"The DVT makes its presence felt straightaway! You don't have to have an empty road in front of you to appreciate the benefits the new engine brings; in fact, it's precisely when your riding is less committed that you notice the biggest difference. At low speeds the distribution is so fluid that when you go slowly you don't even need to keep the classic two fingers on the clutch lever any more. This is true in all four available Riding Modes, but is particularly noticeable in Urban and Touring modes, which are the ones I used most often, given that the weather conditions in which I used the bike (December and January this year, Editor's note), with rather low temperatures and the asphalt usually wet, didn't permit a particularly sporty ride. In any event, the DVT has all the grit of the Ducati twin-cylinders that we know and love."

As I said, as well as the new variable timing system, the Multistrada 1200 can also count on the contribution of the IMU, which can measure variations in the chassis set-up and the speed with which they happen, then go on to coordinate the action of the electronic control systems such as Cornering ABS, Ducati Wheelie Control, and, on the S version, the latest evolution of the Skyhook semi-active suspension in addition to the Ducati Cornering Lights. On this subject Niko told us:

"There was an episode I remember very well in which, if I hadn't had Cornering ABS, the steering would probably have locked. I was approaching a large roundabout not far from the factory when a car that had indicated right suddenly veered in the opposite direction. In fact, I found it right in front of me and as I'd already set my course I couldn't do anything except brake. As if that wasn't enough, the asphalt wasn't completely dry around there. I clearly noticed the intervention of the ABS, thanks to which the front wheel didn't lock, enabling me to slow down in time. A dangerous situation that's unfortunately quite common in everyday riding, but one where the Multistrada's technology provides crucial support."

"In the same way, the electronic suspension also makes a valuable contribution in terms of both safety and comfort, and even someone without the sensitivity and experience of a professional tester notices it. You just have to stop gently at a traffic light or, conversely, take a bend on a fast road, to feel how the response of the fork and damper changes, softer in the first instance and more sustained in the second. Whether it's ABS or the Skyhook suspension, the interesting thing is that the intervention of these systems is clear, without disturbing the rider. The Cornering Lights, too, operate on the same principle; at night in a dark street I used them and they were particularly useful"

Lastly we asked Niko for his first thoughts on the Ducati Multimedia System, the system providing connectivity between bike and smartphone. "It really offers a lot of convenience. You can check that you've received a call or an SMS on the dashboard itself, and if you have a special helmet you can even answer. You no longer have to stop to get your phone out of your pocket, with the added inconvenience of having to take your gloves off.

Those who would like to test Ducati's latest arrival like Niko did will have to be patient for just a little while longer, because the new Multistrada 1200 will soon be available at Ducati dealerships; you can already see it close up however, in all its different set-ups, during the Multistrada Winter Tour, at Europe's major ski resorts.
